Trauma Therapy with Sarah Burns

Turning the lights back on

  • Are you feeling unable to function normally?
  • Do you have intrusive thoughts?
  • Do you feel worthless or blame yourself?
  • Are you having problems sleeping, eating too much or too little, drinking too much alcohol, using substances, have self-harming behaviours?
  • Are you feeling stuck, frozen, numb or not be able to feel at all?
  • Have you experienced a traumatic event/s in your current life or in the past?

What is Trauma?

Trauma is caused by a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms the psyche and causes an invisible injury. It is an experience in which the person is powerless and can’t escape or move away. Time doesn’t heal trauma.

Trauma can also occur from witnessing a distressing or disturbing thing happen to someone else, or hearing about a traumatic incident from a loved one or friend.

Trauma symptoms are a normal response to an abnormal situation, and can include:

  • anxiety and fear
  • depression
  • feelings of worthlessness and shame
  • self-harming behaviours
  • loss of memory/concentration
  • flashbacks/nightmares
  • suicidal thoughts
  • physical illness

What is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy can help you understand what’s happening to you and enable you to process painful emotions. It’s a form of psycho-education, building understanding about the brain and trauma, empowering you with knowledge, and giving you choices for the future.

Trauma therapy is about self-care, recognising your existing coping strategies and developing new ones. It’s about coping with flashbacks or nightmares and recognising your triggers. It’s about recognising the here and now, and can include mindfulness to develop that awareness.
